The Sinai - General Information

Flights
There are direct charter flights from many European airports to Sharm el Sheikh as well as scheduled flights to Cairo with connection flights to Sharm el Sheikh, available all year around.

Entry Visa
You can get a free entry visa at the airport in Sharm El Sheikh, but note that this is valid ONLY for the East Sinai and only for 7 days. A tourist visa that enables you to go on excursions west of Sharm (i.e. the Ras Mohamed National Park) is available at all Egyptian airports or the Egyptian Embassy of your home country (for travelers which arrive via Israel or Jordan). The visa costs US$ 15.- and is valid for one month. Your passport must be valid for at least six month after your arrival in Egypt.

Language
The official language is Arabic. Even so, you can manage very well with English, and often also with Italian or German, everywhere in Sharm El Sheikh.

Currency
The national currency is the Egyptian Pound (L.E.). Exchange rates are published in all banks and exchange offices at most hotels and in the Internet. The banks accept traveler-checks and credit cards; there are several ATM machines in Sharm El Sheikh. The Rock Hotel accepts most international currencies as well as VISA and MASTER credit cards.

Transportation.
It is easy to move around with Taxies in Sharm, the minimum price is 10.00 LE, up to 60.00 LE, depending on the distance. There are many public buses to many different destinations, such as Dahab, Nuweiba, or even Cairo. Ask the reception for assistance if you want to rent a car.

Health & Care.
No vaccinations are required for holidays in Sinai. Nevertheless it is advisable to be vaccinated against Tetanus, Hepatitis-A and Polio.
Especially in the summer months it is very important to drink large amounts of bottled water due to the high temperatures and the resulting dehydration! The tap water in Sharm El Sheikh is not drinkable.

Power
The voltage is 220 V with 50 Hz. socket connections. Be prepared for power failure, which still occurs from time to time.

Weather
The microclimate of the Sinai Peninsular ensures a very convenient weather around the year. However, during the months July and August it can be very hot, and during the winter and early spring months it can get a little cold at night
